Judaism has given the world the Sabbath – a day of rest, joy, and reflection that allows us to contemplate, connect, and rejuvenate ourselves. The Sabbath table takes center stage in the Sabbath experience and becomes the physical venue for incredible experiences to emerge. The table transcends its function as mere furniture for meals; it becomes a metaphor representing longing, belonging, exclusion, and the hope for peace.
This exhibition brings together works from a diverse group of contemporary and early 20th c. artists, alongside Judaica ritual objects from the Museum collection.
Addressing themes of community, continuity, spirituality, resilience, and cultural legacy, the artists delve into the complexities encountered at the Sabbath and holiday table. Their works feature Jews from diverse walks of life, both present and absent from the Sabbath table. The exhibition explores the profound themes of loss, longing, and memory, which are sometimes intertwined with the experiences of children of Holocaust survivors or soldiers returning from an Israeli war, reflecting on the impact of inter-generational traumas and personal narratives on the Sabbath and holiday table. This poignant exploration takes on new dimensions in light of October 7th, as the empty Sabbath table has become a powerful symbol of absence around the world.
Eating with friends and family around a table is a spiritually fulfilling experience that allows for conversation and social celebration. Its uniqueness stems from its weekly recurrence, a combination of routine and holiness that enriches the family and community life while preserving Jewish identity and continuity.
The Sabbath ceremonial objects kept in the collection of the Mishkan Museum of Art, Ein Harod, bridge the generations and connect us to our rich heritage. This collection has recently been enriched by the generous gift from the Tenenbaum-Koren family Judaica collection, represented in the exhibition with selected items.
