Amir Nave’s The Slave Age – an installation that oscillates between drawing, painting, and sculpture – is at once a breached environment and an intimate one. The carriage that is cleft in two by a painting and the enormous figures positioned next to it are on a journey with no destination, goal, purpose, or leader. The artist was clearly driven by a sense of urgency, as evident in the work’s expressiveness and sensuality, which leave the viewer trapped by the futility of the ongoing present. Further meanings are attached to Procession by its placement within the museum’s Pillared Hall, a transitional space that also evokes a sense of sanctity (as in a synagogue, temple, or church).
