The central and exaggerated status of the “design” element in contemporary architecture, along with the negligence and disdain shown toward all other forms of creation of the building environment, are among the biggest disasters of our times. This tendency entails an astonishing waste of raw materials and the creation of hostile and alienating living surroundings, driven by economic interests and devotion to the dictates of the image culture. We are witnessing a huge loss, an entire amassment of human societies and the architecture they created, layer by layer .
This exhibition – focusing on the Bedouin encampment, which is one aspect among the many cases surveyed in Pierre Frey’s project Learning from Vernacular – presents the sophistication of human talent manifested in desert surroundings and a different culture than the global one that is so familiar these days. It asks us to preserve the memory of this great human creativity before it disappears from the face of the earth; encouraging us to find new ways to implement vernacular attitudes in current architecture.

إنّ المكانة المركزية والمُفرطة التي يتبوّأها عنصر «التّصميم» في الهندسة المعمارية الحديثة، إضافة إلى الإهمال والتجاهل المُتّبعين تجاه أيّ شكل آخر من أشكال خلق البيئة المبنيّة، هما من أفظع الكوارث في عصرنا هذا. تؤدّي هذه النّزعة إلى تبذير فاحش للموادّ الخامّ وإلى انتشار لا نهائيّ لبيئات حياتيّة مُغرَّبة ومُغرِّبة في آن، ومردّ ذلك إلى أسباب الربح الاقتصاديّ والانصياع إلى ما تمليه علينا ثقافة الصّورة. إنّنا نشهد خسارة كبرى، خسارة مجمل فنون الهندسة المعمارية التي أنتجتها الحضارات البشريّة، طبقة تلو الأخرى. إنّ هذا المعرض – الذي يتمحور حول الخيمة البدويّة، التي هي جانب واحد من مختلف الجوانب المستعرضة في مشروع بيير فراي «لنتعلّم من العاميّ» – يعرض الكفاءات البشريّة المتطوّرة التي تنعكس في البيئة الحياتيّة الصحراويّة وفي ثقافة تختلف عن الثقافة العالميّة التي نعرفها اليوم. إن المعرض يدعونا إلى الحفاظ على ذاكرة هذا الإنتاج البشريّ، قبل أن يختفي هو أيضًا عن سطح الكرة الأرضيّة، ويحثّنا على إيجاد أساليب جديدة لتطبيق هذه المناهج العاميّة في الهندسة المعمارية الحديثة.عاموس جيتاي
